Ceiling fans can save energy and money on cooling your home this summer. Air conditioners use about 3,500 watts of energy while a ceiling fan will likely use just 60; and this is on the high setting. But don’t be fooled, ceiling fans don’t cool a room. They create a breeze that makes you feel cooler when you’re in the room. The breeze traveling across your skin can actually make you feel 4 to 7 degrees cooler. They are virtually useless, and essentially a waste of energy, if they’re running with no one in the room. So if you’re not in a room, turn it off. Using a ceiling fan when you’re in a room will allow you to raise your thermostat setting by as much as 4 degrees; and you won’t notice the increased temperature. Also, raising it by even just 2 degrees can cut you’re A/C cost from 4 to 6%.
